A market that follows the seasons

Life on the east coast follows the tourist season, and so does the car market. In autumn, when the season ends, seasonal workers and some businesses sell their cars and the choice goes up; in spring, demand rises again as people prepare for the busy months. If you are not in a hurry, October and November are usually the best time to buy here — and the best time to sell is before the season starts.

What to watch for on the coast

Many cars in Ayia Napa and Protaras have spent their life in the sun a few hundred metres from the beach, and some were rental cars or quad-and-buggy company vehicles. Check the paint, the plastics and the seals for sun damage, look underneath for rust, and shake some sand out of the question: ask how the car was used, how many owners it had and whether it was ever rented out.

Getting around from Famagusta district

The A3 motorway connects Ayia Napa and Paralimni with Larnaca in about half an hour, and from there the A2 continues to Nicosia. Distances within the area are short, so a small economical car is enough for most people who live here all year; families who drive to Nicosia or Limassol regularly often choose a comfortable diesel or hybrid instead.

Paperwork and MOT

Buyer and seller sign the change-of-ownership form TOM 9 and hand it in at the Road Transport Department or any Citizen Service Centre — there is one in Paralimni. The change must be reported within 30 days. Check that the MOT is valid: the first test is due four years after first registration and then every two years.
