1. Paperwork first

Ask to see the registration document (log book) and check the name on it matches the seller. Check the MOT certificate date and that road tax is paid — both can be verified online through the Cyprus Road Transport Department. A car with a loan on it cannot be transferred, so ask directly.

2. The viewing

Look at the car in daylight, cold engine. Check tyres (date code and tread), brakes, all electrics, the roof if it has a panoramic or folding one, and the underside for rust from coastal air. Bring a mechanic if you can — any serious seller welcomes it. A video walk-around before you drive across the island saves wasted trips.

3. Test drive

Drive at town speed and on the motorway. Listen for gearbox and suspension noises, check the steering pulls straight and that the air conditioning is cold — in Cyprus it matters.

4. Price and deposit

A seller who puts the price on the page has already priced to sell; sensible offers are still normal. A deposit reserves the car and takes it off the market; the balance is paid at the transfer, not before.

5. Transfer of ownership

Buyer and seller go together to the district transport office. Bring ID; the transfer fee is paid there and the car is in your name the same day. Never pay in full before the transfer is done.

6. Insurance and road tax

Arrange insurance before you drive away — most insurers issue cover the same day with the registration number. Road tax is renewed online. MOT is due yearly for cars over four years old.

Questions

How long does the transfer take?

Usually under an hour at the district transport office, provided the MOT is valid and road tax is paid.

Can I buy a car in Cyprus as a foreign resident?

Yes — you need ID and a Cyprus address for the registration. Many buyers here are UK, German or Russian residents on the island.

Should I pay a deposit?

A modest deposit is normal to reserve a car; the balance is paid at the transfer, never before.
